A coffee Table with ambience,

The brief

The brief
Writing my own brief for the first time was something that I had originally struggled with to find the sweet spot of being not too specific and not too broad. I arrived at designing a place/space/product which would promote conversations through the use of the light. I outlined a couple of considerations that I would look to adhere to throughout the 4 week project.

Initial Cardboard Models

Initial Cardboard Models
At the commencement of cardboard models. I had arrived at designing a coffee table which would include an ambient light that people would be able to surround. I constructed some cardboard models and tried to simulate the light in the areas that I visualised them to be. This process allowed me to construct a pecking order of different designs and allowed me to take some forward as well as leave some behind

Final Design

Final Design
I created this CAD model and knew that it would be the final model that I would be manufacturing. Though with that being said, there were a couple of iterations that I knew I had to work on. The Table legs looked out of place. I knew that when I was in the workshops that I would have to be playing about with the sizes of these legs. I was also unsure of the material selection, mixing with a frosted tabletop.

Shou Sugi Ban Impression

Shou Sugi Ban Impression
After a weekend bonfire away from university, I saw what a lightly fired piece of wood looked like, and it gave me an idea for the workshop the next week. I spoke with technicians about the wood, and I was directed towards Shou Sugi Ban. I sampled this in a more professional manner using a blowtorch and following proper guidelines. I was pleased with the outcome and began the final manufacturing process.
